The Story of The Back Bar at The Trappist:

The Back Bar at The Trappist originally housed a speakeasy called “460’s” until it was closed in 1931 by agents of the United States Treasury Department working with the Oakland Police department. For some reason it was illegal to serve alcohol from 1920 to 1933.

“460’s” had been raided by Police several times since it opened in 1927 but a grizzly discovery was made by Federal Agents while dumping barrels of whisky in the cellar of the establishment and in 1931 it was not only closed permanently but was sealed up to prevent anyone from entering the crime scene.

In late 2008 we leased the adjoining vacant space and unsealed the rooms that housed “460’s” What we found was a completely intact Victorian pub in pristine condition. A few coats of paint and some new light bulbs and we are in business. Just don’t go in the cellar.
